Girls Player of the Week

Jillian Charlet, New Washington

If a player can have a quiet season while averaging 13 points and six rebounds, Charlet has had one. That was, until Saturday. Charlet outplayed Miss Basketball candidate Brittany Schoen, outscoring Schoen 33-31 in New Washington’s huge 70-66 victory over the Rebels. Charlet’s performance put the Mustangs in the driver’s seat in the Southern Athletic Conference and gave New Wash its second straight victory over South Central, which has dominated the SAC for the past six years.

Boys Player of the Week

Bowman Thrasher, Charlestown

Thrasher’s heroics came just in time to save Charlestown from certain elimination from the Mid-Southern Conference race. The Pirate senior scored 12 third-quarter points, turning a 51-43 Charlestown deficit into a 60-58 Pirate lead after three quarter. Charlestown went on to a 78-67 win over Eastern. In the win, Thrasher went 8 for 8 from the field, 2 for 2 from the 3-point line and 5 for 5 from the foul stripe. “I’ve always dreamed of Bowman Thrasher playing that way,” Charlestown coach Sean Smith said. “You can say he was perfect tonight.”
