Co-Player of the Week
Briana Layton, Columbus East

Who needs Shelby Ross? Right? Layton, a senior guard, was the first to step up in the absence of the graduated Ross, who was an Indiana All-Star last season. With five seconds left in regulation in the Lady Olympians’ season opener against Rushville, Layton hit a shot to send the game into overtime. Layton then put the game away in the extra session, going 4-for-4 from the foul line as East won the contest, 84-79. Layton led the way for the Olympians with 27 points, including three 3-pointers.

The senior center had 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Stars took down 17th-ranked Castle in their season opener, 48-37. Burton also played stellar defense as Bedford held the Lady Knights to 27 percent from the field. She was also the catalyst in the Lady Stars’ fast start. Behind 10 first-quarter points by the senior, BNL led 18-9 after the first period. She also had five points and four boards during BNL’s decisive 21-4 run in the third quarter.
