Saturday's Girls Semistate Headlines

AUSTIN, EAST COME UP ONE GAME SHORT

Eagles, Olympians stopped at semistate

TWO-TIME CHAMPS STILL ON TOP

No. 1 Heritage Christian has little problem with No. 3 Austin

By Greg Mengelt of Inside the Game

Austin's goal of advancing to the state championship game came up one game short as the Eagles were knocked off by two-time defending champion and Class 2A's top-ranked Heritage Christian.

The Eagles were led by their three All-State candidates. Junior Kelly Faris, who reportedly hasn't decided whether to play at Connecticut or Notre Dame in two seasons, had 18 points, six rebounds, five assists, a steal and a blocked shot. Freshman Liz Stratman dominated inside with 22 points and nine rebounds, and Butler recruit Claire Freeman -- a junior -- had 14 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Emily Anderson also had 18 points, hitting 6 of her 8 shots from the field.

"They're amazingly talented," Austin coach Jared Petersen said. "When you play them, you have a very thin margin of error. You have to click on all cylinders and we didn't do that." Full Story

BIG RUNS BURY OLYMPIANS

Carmel's streaks lead to a 66-44 semistate win over East

Fifth-ranked Carmel went on a 12-0 run to end the first half and a 9-0 run at the end of the third to put away Columbus East, 66-44, and advance to next Saturday's state championship game against South Bend Washington.

Midway through the second quarter, the Olympians trailed just 20-19 before the Greyhounds' 12-0 run to end the half gave them a 32-19 lead at the break. Late in the second quarter, East trailed 43-34. Then, Carmel went on a 9-0 run -- led by Chrissy Steffen's seven points -- to take an insurmountable 52-34 lead after three quarters.

The Greyhounds, now 21-4 and semistate champions for the first time since 1995, were led by Steffen. The junior had shot 10 for 21 from the field and had a game-high 25 points. Danielle Havel contributed with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Lauren McRoberts had seven points, six rebounds and six assists. Full Story
