STARS

Class 5A, Sectional 8

Hoosier Hills Conference

October 24, 2008

Looking Ahead

CLASS 5A, SECTIONAL 8

First-Round Opponent: Floyd Central

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: At North Lawrence High School in Bedford

Records: Floyd Central (5-4 overall, 3-4 in the Hoosier Hills Conference); Bedford North Lawrence (6-3 overall, 5-2 in the Hoosier Hills Conference).

Sagarin Ratings: Floyd Central (No. 154 Overall; No. 59 in Class 5A); Bedford North Lawrence (No. 89 Overall; No. 42 in Class 5A).

Sagarin Game Prediction: Bedford North Lawrence by 16.

Last Week: The Stars fell one win short of its second HHC championship in three years with a 44-6 loss to five-time defending champion Columbus East. After a four-game losing streak, Floyd Central won its second straight game – a 35-34 come-from-behind thriller over rival New Albany – to finish the regular season above .500 for the first time since its HHC championship in 2003.

Regular-Season Meeting: Three weeks ago – in Week 7 – Bedford North Lawrence had no problem downing the Highlanders, 35-7.

Next Week: The winner will face the winner of the Jeffersonville-Jennings County game. A Bedford North Lawrence win would send it to Jeffersonville or the Stars would be at home against Jennings County. If Floyd Central wins, it would be at home against either the Red Devils or the Panthers.

Last Year: Both teams lost in the first round. Floyd Central fell to Castle, 39-20, while BNL lost to eventual sectional champion Jeffersonville, 14-0.

The “Inside” Scoop: I think both teams are playing their best football late in the season. I still think the Stars have the superior team and should win fairly easily.

Scoop’s Pick: Bedford North Lawrence 31, Floyd Central 17.

Semifinal Winners

Favorite: Castle. This sectional is truly wide open between four teams -- the Knights, Jeffersonville, New Albany and Bedford North Lawrence -- but Castle has the best 2008 resume.

Darkhorse: Floyd Central. The Highlanders' Week 9 win over New Albany showed that they have grown up this season and can play with any team in Sectional 8.

Best Player: Jamie Goldsmith, Jeffersonville. Like picking the sectional champion, this is a toss up between players like Graham Saiko (Castle QB), Edward Baker (Jeff QB) and Graham Brown (New Albany QB), but Goldsmith has the ability to make game-breaking plays at any time.

X-Factor: Brett Martin. Martin, a first-year WR for New Albany, is a great possession receiver with the ability to stretch the field. In combination with Trevor Gordon and Pierre Blackmon, New Albany has a scary passing game that could lead the Bulldogs to their first sectional crown since 2002.

Scoop's Picks

First Round: Castle 42, Evansville North 7; Jeffersonville 29, Jennings County 12; Bedford North Lawrence 31, Floyd Central 17.

Semifinals: Castle 21, New Albany 13; Jeffersonville 28, Bedford North Lawrence 21.

Championship: Castle 30, Jeffersonville 26.

The "Inside" Scoop: I have a hard time picking against defending champion Jeffersonville, now that the Red Devils are healthy. But they have been so inconsistent all season, I wouldn't trust my pick. Castle has been the most consistent team in the sectional, so I give them a slight edge over Jeff, New Albany and BNL.

Note: We will make predictions each week, making adjustments after each round.

EAST FINISHES UNBEATEN

The Olympians go 9-0 in Regular Season with 4-6 win over Stars

Columbus East topped off its fifth straight Hoosier Hills Conference championship by going 7-0 in league play with a 44-6 win over Bedford North Lawrence on Friday.

The victory clinched East's third outright HHC championship in four years.

The Olympians were led by senior running back Joumeel McLaurine, who had the finest performance of his career with 189 yards and four touchdowns.

He scored once in each quarter; including the game's opening score on a 32-yard run. He continued to stretch the score with a 23-yard TD run in the second quarter to give the Olympians a 21-3 lead; a 33-yard run to give East an 28-6 advantage; and a fourth-quarter score from 47 yards out to give the O's their final 44-6 lead.

The East defense held the Stars to 203 total yards and finished the regular season only allowing 57 total points, most of which came against its second team.

Clayton Miller led the defense with eight tackles and a tackle for loss. Anthony Miller intercepted his HHC-best sixth pass. Damon Megerle, who had a 6-yard TD run on offense, had two tackles, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble on defense.

Top-rated East begins its quest to win its second Class 4A championship on Friday when it hosts 4-5 Seymour on Friday in the first round of Sectional 15 play. The Owls beat Madison 35-14 on Friday and were an overtime loss from winning their last three regular-season games.

Bedford hosts Floyd Central on the same night in the first round of Sectional 8 action. The Highlanders finished the regular season 5-4 after upsetting New Albany in a 35-34 come-from-behind victory in their regular-season finale.

Looking Ahead

This Week’s Opponent: Columbus East

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: At Bedford North Lawrence High School

Records: Columbus East (8-0 overall, 6-0 in the Hoosier Hills Conference); Bedford North Lawrence (6-2 overall, 5-1 in the Hoosier Hills Conference).

State Rankings: Columbus East (No. 1 AP, No. 1 IFCA in Class 4A).

Sagarin Ratings: Columbus East (No. 6 Overall; No. 2 in Class 4A); Bedford North Lawrence (No. 78 Overall; No. 40 in Class 5A).

Sagarin Game Prediction: Columbus East by 23.

Last Week: Columbus East clinched at least a share of its fifth straight conference championship – a feat never before accomplished in the HHC – by beating Jeffersonville, 34-6. Jeff scored the game’s first TD before the Olympians ran off 34 consecutive points. BNL won its fourth straight game, 47-7 over Madison, behind QB Jacob Perry, who rushed for 205 yards on 10 carries and threw for another 91 yards. He rushed for two touchdowns and threw for two more.

Last Year vs. Columbus East: East clinched its fourth straight HHC championship with a 44-6 revenge victory over the Stars, who upset the Olympians to end the 2006 regular season and share the title with East.

Last 10 Years vs. Columbus East: Columbus East 8-2. The Olympians have won eight of the last nine meetings.

The “Inside” Scoop: I think this game is destined to be the title game year-in and year-out. This year, though – as much as I like Bedford – there’s a huge talent gap.

Scoop’s Pick: Columbus East 42, Bedford North Lawrence 10.

STARS SET UP HHC TITLE MATCH

With a 47-7 win over Madison, BNL gives itself title hopes

After a 47-7 win over Madison on Friday, Bedford North Lawrence will host Columbus East next Friday for a shot at a share of the Hoosier Hills Conference title.

It's a situation similar to 2006, when the Stars upset the Olympians to tie for the HHC crown.

But it couldn't have happened without four straight impressive victories, including another stellar performance on Friday.

Or, more appropriately, an outstanding four minutes.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Stars broke on top early in the second quarter on a Logan Brown 11-yard TD run.

Then, BNL went on a run rarely equaled, scoring 37 points in the next four minutes of play.

After its fourth trip into Madison's red zone ended with a 22-yard Erik Moorman field goal to give the Stars a 10-0 lead, Brad Carrico intercepted a Zach Zehren pass and returned it to the Madison 2-yard-line. On the next play -- as the halftime buzzer sounded -- Brown carried the ball in for a 16-0 lead. An ensuing Moorman PAT gave the Stars a 17-0 halftime lead.

The momentum clearly carried over into the thid quarter, where BNL scored 30 points on four touchdowns and a safety. Twenty-three of those points came in the first 3:56 of the period. Star QB Jacob Perry threw touchdowns to Carrico and Brown and ran two in himself in the third quarter.

Perry completed 4 of 7 passes for 91 yards and two scores. He also carried the ball 10 times for a season-high 205 yards and two more touchdowns. Brown had 94 total yards with three scores.

Ryan Fish scored Madison's lone TD on a 44-yard run in the fourth quarter. He finished with 81 yards on six carries.

The championship task won't be easy. East hasn't lost in the HHC since the 2006 defeat to the Stars. In fact, Friday's 34-6 win over Jeffersonville clinched the Olympians' at least a share of their fifth straight league crown. No team in HHC history had done that before Class 4A, No. 1 East did it on Friday.

Madison finishes its regular season next Friday at Seymour. The Owls fell to 3-5 after a 48-41 triple-overtime loss to New Albany on Friday.

Logan Brown and Jacob Perry led the Stars' offense. Brown had 94 rushing yards, while Perry completed 7 of 9 passes for 135 yards and the two touchdowns to Carrico.
