PIRATES
Class 3A,
Sectional 23
Mid-Southern
Conference
October 24, 2008
Looking Ahead
CLASS 3A, SECTIONAL 23
First-Round
Opponent: North Harrison
Time:
7 p.m.
Location:
At Charlestown High
School
Records:
North Harrison (3-5
overall, 3-2 in the Mid-Southern Conference); Charlestown (6-3 overall,
5-1 in the Mid-Southern Conference).
Sagarin Ratings:
North Harrison
(No. 279 Overall; No. 58 in Class 3A); Charlestown (No. 190 Overall; No.
38 in Class 3A).
Sagarin Game
Prediction:
Charlestown by 27.
Last Week:
The Cougars and the
Pirates – who met in Week 8 – both lost in Week 9. Charlestown dropped a
28-14 decision to 8-1 Lawrenceburg, while North Harrison fell to upstart
Crawford County, 34-27.
Regular-Season Meeting:
Two week
ago, Charlestown scored 25 second-half points to clinch its second
straight MSC championship, 25-7 over the Cougars.
Next Week:
The winner will face the winner of the Salem-Heritage Hills
contest. If Charlestown wins, it will host Salem or go to Santa Claus to
face the Patriots. A North Harrison win will have the Cougars at home
against either Salem or Heritage Hills.
Last Year:
Charlestown won its first-round contest over Brown County before falling
to Heritage Hills, 42-24 in the sectional semifinal. North Harrison lost
in the first round, 36-29 to Edgewood.
The “Inside” Scoop:
Charlestown should beat the Cougars again. This time, I think the
Pirates will throw the knock-out punch much earlier.
Scoop’s Pick:
Charlestown 40, North Harrison 14.

Semifinals
Heritage Hills/Salem Winner vs.

Edgewood/Corydon Central Winner vs.
Crawford County/Brown County Winner
Championship
Semifinal
Winners
Favorite:
Heritage Hills. Despite being in a rebuilding
season, the Patriots' tradition speaks loudly. Plus, HH
faces -- by far -- the toughest schedule of any team in
Sectional 23.
Darkhorse:
Edgewood. Once again, the Mustangs got a favorable
draw. Senior QB Josh Collier gives Edgewood at shot at
winning any game in this tournament.
Best
Player: Cameron Metzger, Charlestown. The Pirate
senior was easily the best player in this sectional
until an early-season knee injury. He's back. If he's
back near 100%, Charlestown has a great shot at winning
its first sectional since 1996.
X-Factor:
Heritage Hills. It's really hard to tell just how
good the Patriots are. They have lost to some inferior
teams, but they beat a very good team in South Spencer,
23-0, in Week 9.
Scoop's
Picks
First
Round:
Heritage
Hills 18, Salem 13; Charlestown 40, North Harrison 14;
Edgewood 49, Corydon Central 12; Crawford County 32,
Brown County 14.
Semifinals: Heritage Hills 35, Charlestown 27;
Edgewood 50, Crawford County 16.
Championship: Heritage Hills 42, Edgewood 21.
The
"Inside" Scoop: Oh, so much to say about
this sectional. 1.) Heritage Hills is still the
favorite, but the Patriots are vulnerable -- good news
for Charlestown and Salem; 2.) Edgewood is solid and
will have little problem getting to the championship
game for the second straight year. If things fall right,
the Mustangs could win their first sectional title since
1990; 3.) Salem is a legit contender. As good as the
Lion defense is, Salem will be in any game. 4.) Crawford
County is going to win five games this season. Just how
amazing is that? Can you say, "Team of the Future." 5.)
After saying all of that, Heritage Hills will still
probably win Sectional 23.

PIRATES FALL
TO LAWRENCEBURG
Tiger defense
holds Pirates for 28-14 victory
Lawrenceburg's Sean Snider rushed for 141 yards and
scored four times, leading 8-1 Lawreburg to a 28-14 win
over Charlestown on Friday.
The Tiger
back scored three times in the first half and the game's
only second-half touchdown, and the Lawrenceburg defense
did the rest.
Despite
having All-State back Cameron Metzger back for the first
time since Week 4 -- in a limited role -- the Pirates
managed just 14 points against a Lawrenceburg defense
that
After Snider
scored his first touchdown, the Pirates got on the board
late in the first quarter on a 56-yard TD pass from
Damon Vest to Josh Graham.
In the second
quarter, Vest countered another Snider touchdown with a
3-yard run of his own to knot the score at 14.
However,
Snider scored three minutes later and the Tigers never
trailed again.
Graham led
Charlestown with 101 total yards.
Charlestown
(6-3) hosts 3-5 North Harrison next Friday in the first
round of Sectional 23 action. The Cougars lost to
Crawford County, 34-27 on Friday.
On the same
night, Lawrenceburg hosts upstart Indianapolis
Washington. The Continental are 4-5 after a 37-19 win
over Northwest on Friday.

SECOND-HALF BURST LEADS PIRATES TO MSC TITLE
Charlestown wins second straight league
crown with 25-7 victory
Charlestown trailed North Harrison 7-0
Friday in what amounted to a Mid-Southern
Conference title match.
The Pirates -- much like they did in an
earlier win over Clarksville -- exploded in
the second half to clinch their second
straight MSC championship.
Damon Vest and Josh Graham each ran for
second-half touchdowns as Charlestown pulled
away.
Graham -- a junior running back -- led the
Pirates with 176 yards on 15 carries. Vest
added 129 yards on just seven carries.
North Harrison sophomore Matt Bruderle, who
had 168 rushing yards of his own, scored on
a 13-yard TD with 13 seconds left in the
first half.
After struggling in the red zone in the
first half, Vest made it a moot point with
51 and 47 yard runs in the second half.
Graham finally scored twice in the red zone
in the second half, on runs of 20 and nine
yards.
The Pirates prepare for the sectional next
Friday when they host 7-1 Lawrenceburg.
After dropping their first game of the
season two weeks ago, 46-8 to East Central,
the Tigers beat South Dearborn, 41-9 on
Friday.
At the same time, North Harrison will be at
Crawford County. The Wolfpack are 3-5 after
a 44-20 loss to Clarksville on Friday.

SALEM WINS BIG MID-SOUTHERN CONTEST
Lions top defending champion Charlestown,
18-13
Salem pulled even with Charlestown in the
Mid-Southern Conference race with an 18-13
win over Charlestown on Friday.
Both teams are 4-1 -- and on top of the
league standings -- after the Lions won
their third straight game and fifth of their
last six contests.
Both sides need two MSC wins to clinch their
share of the league crown.
The Lions took a decisive 18-7 lead after a
long drive in the fourth quarter when Jarod
Farmer scored from five yards out.
Charlestown countered with a score with :01
left in the contest, but it was too late.
After a scoreless first quarter, Salem broke
on top on a Christian Chastain TD run early
in the second quarter.
After Charlestown took the lead on a Michael
Baines run and an Ariel Stephens PAT with
4:41 left in the half, Salem struck back
with a TD late in the second period.
Chastain hit Logan Walker on a 7-yard TD
pass with :13 to go in the half to give the
Lions a 12-7 halftime lead.
Charlestown outgained the Lions 333 to 198.
Josh Graham led all players with 169 total
yards.
Justin Beavers had 63 yards on the ground
for Salem.
Both teams will try to stay atop the MSC
next Friday.
That night, Salem hosts 1-7 Corydon Central,
which lost to unbeaten Paoli, 47-6 on
Friday.
Meanwhile, the Pirates hosts North Harrison.
The Cougars stayed in the MSC race with a
45-18 win over winless Eastern on Friday.

GRAHAM'S 7 TOUCHDOWNS LEADS PIRATES
Charlestown takes down Corydon Central,
55-26
Josh Graham scored seven touchdowns -- six
in the first half, one in the second --
leading Charlestown to a 55-26 win over
Corydon Central on Friday.
Graham had three rushing touchdowns in the
first quarter, then two in the second. He
also returned a fumble 32 yards for a
touchdown in the second period to push
Charlestown out to a 41-18 lead at halftime.
He also scored the first touchdown of the
second half on a 3-yard run.
The junior finished with 162 yards on 25
carries. He also had 45 yards on three
receptions.
Michael Baines backed up Graham with 137
yards on 12 carries.
The victory was a big one for the Pirates,
who lost their first regular-season game in
two seasons last week against Providence. It
also gives them a 4-0 mark in the MSC, one
victory away from clinching a share for the
MSC title.
Charlestown will try to clinch its second
straight MSC title when it goes to Salem
next Friday. The Lions are 4-2 and 3-1 in
the MSC after a 44-0 win over Eastern on
Friday. They could pull even with
Charlestown in the standings with a win.
Lost in Graham's performance was the second
big outing for the Corydon passing
combination of Richard Armstrong and Brandon
Dunaway. A 27-yard Armstrong-to-Dunaway pass
gave the Panthers an early 6-0 lead. They
hooked up for two more TD passes in the
first half, a 20 yarder in the first quarter
to pull the Panthers to within 14-12 and an
80 yarder in the second quarter to cut the
Pirates' lead to 34-18.
Armstrong completed 15 of 27 passes for 197
yards. Dunaway caught four passes for 142
yards. Dunaway also had four tackles and an
interception on defense.
Meanwhile, Corydon Central goes to Paoli to
face a resurgent Rams squad. After years and
years of losing, the Rams are 6-0 under
second-year coach Brian Balsmeyer. They beat
Crawford County 49-7 on Friday.
