OLYMPIANS

Class 4A, Sectional 15

Hoosier Hills Conference

October 24, 2008

Looking Ahead

CLASS 4A, SECTIONAL 15

First-Round Opponent: Columbus East

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: At Columbus East High School

Records: Seymour (4-5 overall, 4-3 in the Hoosier Hills Conference); Columbus East (9-0 overall, 7-0 in the Hoosier Hills Conference).

State Rankings: Columbus East (No. 1 AP, No. 1 IFCA in Class 4A).

Sagarin Ratings: Seymour (No. 121 Overall; No. 29 in Class 4A); Columbus East (No. 6 Overall; No. 2 in Class 4A).

Sagarin Game Prediction: East by 29.

Last Week: Columbus East won the HHC championship outright with a 44-6 win over Bedford North Lawrence behind a 189-yard rushing performance by Joumeel McLaurine. Meanwhile, Seymour beat Madison, 35-7, after a 28-7 second half performance.

Regular-Season Meeting: In one of its closest games of the season, the East defeated the Owls, 44-14.

Next Week: The winner will face the winner of the South Dearborn-Madison game. An East win would send the Olympians on the road to face either the Knights or the Cubs. If Seymour wins, it would host Madison or go to South Dearborn.

Last Year: East won its second straight sectional championship and third in four years. It was the Olympians’ fifth sectional title in school history. The Olympians did not meet Seymour, which lost to East Central in the first round, en route to the sectional title.

The “Inside” Scoop: Three years ago, Seymour shocked the Olympians in the first round of Sectional 15 play. As good as that East team was, this one is much, much better and less susceptible to an upset.

Scoop’s Pick: Columbus East 45, Seymour 7.

CLASS 4A, SECTIONAL 15 PREVIEW

Sectional 15 Schedule

First Round

Franklin County (1-8) at Shelbyville (8-1)

East Central (8-1) at Connersville (1-8)

Seymour (4-5) at Columbus East (9-0)

South Dearborn (3-6) at Madison (1-8)

Seymour/Columbus East Winner vs. South Dearborn/Madison Winner

Championship

Semifinal Winners

Favorite: Columbus East. As much of a favorite as a favorite can be.

Darkhorse: East Central. In a normal year, the 8-1 Trojans would be a favorite to win a sectional -- if not more. This season, however, they have to hope for a miracle against No. 1 East.

Best Player: Dusty Kiel. If the voters in Indiana are sane, the Olympians' senior quarterback is the hands-down Mr. Football. Unfortunately, they're not sane.

X-Factor: Columbus East's health. This is the only thing I can think of that could stop the Olympians. They have had some healthy issues and injuries probably stopped them from winning the 2007 4A championship.

Scoop's Picks

First Round: Shelbyville 41, Franklin County 14; East Central 43, Connersville 12; Columbus East 45, Seymour 7; Madison 26, South Dearborn 19.

Semifinals: East Central 22, Shelbyville 13; Columbus East 55, Madison 7.

Championship: Columbus East 42, East Central 14.

The "Inside" Scoop: Not much needs to be said; East in a landslide.

EAST FINISHES UNBEATEN

The Olympians go 9-0 in Regular Season with 4-6 win over Stars

Columbus East topped off its fifth straight Hoosier Hills Conference championship by going 7-0 in league play with a 44-6 win over Bedford North Lawrence on Friday.

The victory clinched East's third outright HHC championship in four years.

The Olympians were led by senior running back Joumeel McLaurine, who had the finest performance of his career with 189 yards and four touchdowns.

He scored once in each quarter; including the game's opening score on a 32-yard run. He continued to stretch the score with a 23-yard TD run in the second quarter to give the Olympians a 21-3 lead; a 33-yard run to give East an 28-6 advantage; and a fourth-quarter score from 47 yards out to give the O's their final 44-6 lead.

The East defense held the Stars to 203 total yards and finished the regular season only allowing 57 total points, most of which came against its second team.

Clayton Miller led the defense with eight tackles and a tackle for loss. Anthony Miller intercepted his HHC-best sixth pass. Damon Megerle, who had a 6-yard TD run on offense, had two tackles, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble on defense.

Top-rated East begins its quest to win its second Class 4A championship on Friday when it hosts 4-5 Seymour on Friday in the first round of Sectional 15 play. The Owls beat Madison 35-14 on Friday and were an overtime loss from winning their last three regular-season games.

Bedford hosts Floyd Central on the same night in the first round of Sectional 8 action. The Highlanders finished the regular season 5-4 after upsetting New Albany in a 35-34 come-from-behind victory in their regular-season finale.

Looking Ahead

This Week’s Opponent: Bedford North Lawrence

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: At Bedford North Lawrence High School

Records: Columbus East (8-0 overall, 6-0 in the Hoosier Hills Conference); Bedford North Lawrence (6-2 overall, 5-1 in the Hoosier Hills Conference).

State Rankings: Columbus East (No. 1 AP, No. 1 IFCA in Class 4A).

Sagarin Ratings: Columbus East (No. 6 Overall; No. 2 in Class 4A); Bedford North Lawrence (No. 78 Overall; No. 40 in Class 5A).

Sagarin Game Prediction: Columbus East by 23.

Last Week: Columbus East clinched at least a share of its fifth straight conference championship – a feat never before accomplished in the HHC – by beating Jeffersonville, 34-6. Jeff scored the game’s first TD before the Olympians ran off 34 consecutive points. BNL won its fourth straight game, 47-7 over Madison, behind QB Jacob Perry, who rushed for 205 yards on 10 carries and threw for another 91 yards. He rushed for two touchdowns and threw for two more.

Last Year vs. Bedford North Lawrence: East clinched its fourth straight HHC championship with a 44-6 revenge victory over the Stars, who upset the Olympians to end the 2006 regular season and share the title with East.

Last 10 Years vs. Bedford North Lawrence: Columbus East 8-2. The Olympians have won eight of the last nine meetings.

The “Inside” Scoop: I think this game is destined to be the title game year-in and year-out. This year, though – as much as I like Bedford – there’s a huge talent gap.

Scoop’s Pick: Columbus East 42, Bedford North Lawrence 10.

EAST EARNS FIFTH STRAIGHT HHC CROWN

Olympians score 34 straight points in another big win

By scoring 34 consecutive points, Columbus East became the first Hoosier Hills Conference team ever to win a fifth straight HHC title.

In the past four years, the Olympians have won three outright titles and tied with Bedford North Lawrence in 2006. East meets the Stars next Friday to try to avoid a three-way tie with BNL and New Albany.

Jeffersonville recovered its own onside kick on the opening kickoff and drove for the game's first points, which culminated in a Jamie Goldsmith 13-yard TD run.

It was the first time all season an opponents has scored a first-quarter touchdown against the Olympians.

They responded immediately and then slowed pulled away from the Red Devils.

By the end of the first quarter, East led 14-6 after Dusty Kiel completed TD passes to Dywice Wilson (19 yards) and Shane Henderson (five yards).

The Olympians scored a TD in each of the next three periods. Kiel had a hand in all five East scores.

In the second period, the 2007 ITG "Player of the Year," scored on a 5-yard run. Early in the third quarter, he hit Wilson on an 80-yard TD pass. Then, in the fourth, he ran one in from eight yards out.

Kiel finished with 228 yards and three touchdowns passing and 128 yards and two scores on the ground.

Wilson caught six passes for 169 yards and two scores.

Defensively, the Olympians held Jeff to 234 total yards and just 12 first downs. They held Goldsmith, an All-State candidate, to just 69 yards on 18 carries.

Anthony Miller had two more interceptions on defense and now leads East with five. Devon Davis had 10 tackles, four tackles for loss and blocked kick.

Caleb Browner and Bryson Florence led the Jeff defense with nine tackles apiece. Ryan Pierce had eight tackles, a tackle for loss and two passes defended.

Jeffersonville (3-5) completes its regular season next Friday at Jennings County. The Red Devils face the winless Panthers two next two weeks, with the second being the first round of Sectional 8 play

Bedford North Lawrence -- East's final regular-season opponents -- won its fifth fourth game, 47-7 over Madison on Friday. The Stars are 6-2.
