BULL DOGS
Class 5A,
Sectional 7
Conference Indiana
CLASS 5A,
SECTIONAL 7 PREVIEW
October 24,
2008
Looking
Ahead
CLASS 5A, SECTIONAL 7
First-Round Opponent:
Bloomington South
Time:
7
p.m.
Location:
At
Bloomington South High School
Records:
Columbus North (4-5 overall, 3-4 in Conference
Indiana); Bloomington South (7-2 overall, 5-2 in
Conference Indiana).
State Rankings:
Bloomington South
(No. 14 in Class 5A).
Sagarin Ratings:
Columbus North (No 36 overall, No. 18 in Class 5A);
Bloomington South
(No 10 overall, No. 8 in Class 5A).
Sagarin Game Prediction:
Bloomington South by 13.
Last Week:
The Bull Dogs dropped a close contest to Conference
Indiana champion Southport, 21-16. At the same time,
the Panthers improved to 7-2 with a shutout 42-0
victory over winless Perry Meridian, 42-0.
Regular-Season Meeting:
In
Week 8, Bloomington South scored the final 14 points
of the game and edged the Bull Dogs, 28-14.
Next Week:
The winner will face the winner of the Center Grove vs. Terre
Haute South game. If North wins, it will be at home
against either team. If South wins, the Panthers
will host Center Grove or go to Terre Haute South.
Last Year:
North won its second straight sectional title – and
third in four years – in 2007. The Bull Dogs did not
meet South, which lost 17-14 to Decatur Central in
the first round, during its run to the championship.
The “Inside” Scoop:
Last week, this game was very close – much closer
than its 14-point difference. As good as South coach
Drew Wood is – and he’s undoubtedly one of the best
coaches in Indiana – I like Tim Bless making
adjustments for a rematch.
Scoop’s Pick:
Columbus North 24, Bloomington South 21.
Sectional 7 Schedule

Championship
Semifinal
Winners
Favorite:
Center Grove. This is the Trojans' tournament to
win. The winner of eight straight games, Center Grove
may be the best team in Indiana.
Darkhorse:
Bloomington South. At 7-2, it's hard to call
Bloomington South a darkhorse. The truth is, however,
the Panthers are a longshot against Center Grove.
Best
Player: Jordan Luallen, Center Grove. The Trojan
quarterback is one of the best all-around players in the
state and is a serious Mr. Football candidate.
X-Factor:
Jon Franz, Columbus North. If the Bull Dogs are
close, they feel confident that their all-state kicker
can kick them to a victory.
Scoop's
Picks:
First
Round: Bloomington North 35, Decatur Central 21;
Martinsville 21, Terre Haute North 16; Center Grove 65,
Terre Haute South 0; Columbus North 24, Bloomington
South 21.
Semifinals: Bloomington North 26, Martinsville 16;
Center Grove 45, Columbus North 10.
Championship Game: Center Grove 52, Bloomington
North 7.
The
"Inside" Scoop: The only real upset I see
is Columbus North over Bloomington South. I love the way
the Bulldogs are progressing and I like Coach Bless in a
rematch. Other than that, I think Bloomington North --
also coached by a Bless -- has been one of the
most-improved teams in Class 5A this season.
Note:
We will make predictions each week, making adjustments
after each round.
