PANTHERS

Class 3A, Sectional 23

Mid-Southern Conference

October 24, 2008

Looking Ahead

CLASS 3A, SECTIONAL 23

First-Round Opponent: Edgewood

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: At Corydon Central High School

Records: Edgewood (8-1 overall, 5-0 in the Western Indiana Conference); Corydon Central (1-8 overall, 1-5 in the Mid-Southern Conference).

State Rankings: Edgewood (No. 10 AP, No. 9 IFCA in Class 3A).

Sagarin Ratings: Edgewood (No. 122 Overall; No. 19 in Class 3A); Corydon Central (No. 298 Overall; No. 62 in Class 3A).

Sagarin Game Prediction: Edgewood by 35.

Last Week: Corydon Central dropped its fourth straight contest, 55-0 to unbeaten Tecumseh. The WIC champion Mustangs exploded for 62 points in their eighth straight win, 62-31 over Beech Grove.

Regular-Season Meeting: Did Not Play.

Next Week: The winner will face the winner of the Crawford County-Brown County game. A Corydon Central victory would send them on the road for a semifinal game against either the Wolfpack or the Eagles. If Edgewood wins, it would host Brown County or go to Marengo to face Crawford County.

Last Year: The Mustangs topped the Panthers, 47-7 in the semifinal, before going on to lose in the championship game, 51-15 to Heritage Hills.

The “Inside” Scoop: Edgewood has come a long, long way in the past couple of years and may be on the verge of its first sectional championship since 1990.

Scoop’s Pick: Edgewood 49, Corydon Central 12.

CLASS 3A, SECTIONAL 23 PREVIEW

Sectional 23 Schedule

First Round

Heritage Hills (5-3) at Salem (7-2)

North Harrison (3-5) at Charlestown (6-3)

Edgewood (8-1) at Corydon Central (1-8)

Crawford County (4-5) at Brown County (1-8)

Semifinals

Heritage Hills/Salem Winner vs. North Harrison/Charlestown Winner

Edgewood/Corydon Central Winner vs. Crawford County/Brown County Winner

Championship

Semifinal Winners

Favorite: Heritage Hills. Despite being in a rebuilding season, the Patriots' tradition speaks loudly. Plus, HH faces -- by far -- the toughest schedule of any team in Sectional 23.

Darkhorse: Edgewood. Once again, the Mustangs got a favorable draw. Senior QB Josh Collier gives Edgewood at shot at winning any game in this tournament.

Best Player: Cameron Metzger, Charlestown. The Pirate senior was easily the best player in this sectional until an early-season knee injury. He's back. If he's back near 100%, Charlestown has a great shot at winning its first sectional since 1996.

X-Factor: Heritage Hills. It's really hard to tell just how good the Patriots are. They have lost to some inferior teams, but they beat a very good team in South Spencer, 23-0, in Week 9.

Scoop's Picks

First Round: Heritage Hills 18, Salem 13; Charlestown 40, North Harrison 14; Edgewood 49, Corydon Central 12; Crawford County 32, Brown County 14.

Semifinals: Heritage Hills 35, Charlestown 27; Edgewood 50, Crawford County 16.

Championship: Heritage Hills 42, Edgewood 21.

The "Inside" Scoop: Oh, so much to say about this sectional. 1.) Heritage Hills is still the favorite, but the Patriots are vulnerable -- good news for Charlestown and Salem; 2.) Edgewood is solid and will have little problem getting to the championship game for the second straight year. If things fall right, the Mustangs could win their first sectional title since 1990; 3.) Salem is a legit contender. As good as the Lion defense is, Salem will be in any game. 4.) Crawford County is going to win five games this season. Just how amazing is that? Can you say, "Team of the Future." 5.) After saying all of that, Heritage Hills will still probably win Sectional 23.

BRAVES FINISH UNBEATEN FOR FIRST TIME

With a 55-0 win over Corydon Central

Tecumseh finished unbeaten in the regular season for the first time in school history when it beat Corydon Central, 55-0 on Friday.

It was the Braves' defense fourth shutout of the season. Tecumseh's defense surrendered just 44 points all season -- 20 of which came in Week 8 against Providence.

On Friday, the Braves were led by Bryce Speicher, who had 187 of Tecumseh's 328 rushing yards. He scored three first quarter touchdowns to put the game away early. He also caught two passes for 23 yards.

Jacob Duncan added 170 yards and three second-half touchdowns.

Jeremiah Windell had 12 tackles and a quarterback sack for the Corydon Central defense.

Corydon Central kicks off Sectional 23 play next Friday at home against 8-1 Edgewood. The Mustangs won their eighth straight game, 62-31 over Beech Grove on Friday.

The Braves have one of the state's biggest games on Friday when they host Linton-Stockton, which is also unbeaten. The Miners completed their regular season unbeaten after a 68-0 win over North Central on Friday. It was Linton's fifth shutout in nine games this season.

GRAHAM'S 7 TOUCHDOWNS LEADS PIRATES

Charlestown takes down Corydon Central, 55-26

Josh Graham scored seven touchdowns -- six in the first half, one in the second -- leading Charlestown to a 55-26 win over Corydon Central on Friday.

Graham had three rushing touchdowns in the first quarter, then two in the second. He also returned a fumble 32 yards for a touchdown in the second period to push Charlestown out to a 41-18 lead at halftime.

He also scored the first touchdown of the second half on a 3-yard run.

The junior finished with 162 yards on 25 carries. He also had 45 yards on three receptions.

Michael Baines backed up Graham with 137 yards on 12 carries.

The victory was a big one for the Pirates, who lost their first regular-season game in two seasons last week against Providence. It also gives them a 4-0 mark in the MSC, one victory away from clinching a share for the MSC title.

Charlestown will try to clinch its second straight MSC title when it goes to Salem next Friday. The Lions are 4-2 and 3-1 in the MSC after a 44-0 win over Eastern on Friday. They could pull even with Charlestown in the standings with a win.

Lost in Graham's performance was the second big outing for the Corydon passing combination of Richard Armstrong and Brandon Dunaway. A 27-yard Armstrong-to-Dunaway pass gave the Panthers an early 6-0 lead. They hooked up for two more TD passes in the first half, a 20 yarder in the first quarter to pull the Panthers to within 14-12 and an 80 yarder in the second quarter to cut the Pirates' lead to 34-18.

Armstrong completed 15 of 27 passes for 197 yards. Dunaway caught four passes for 142 yards. Dunaway also had four tackles and an interception on defense.

Meanwhile, Corydon Central goes to Paoli to face a resurgent Rams squad. After years and years of losing, the Rams are 6-0 under second-year coach Brian Balsmeyer. They beat Crawford County 49-7 on Friday.
