MUSKETEERS
Class 2A,
Sectional 31
Mid-Southern
Conference
October 24, 2008
Looking Ahead
CLASS 2A, SECTIONAL 31
First-Round Opponent:
Mitchell
Time:
7 p.m.
Location:
At Mitchell High School
Records:
Eastern (0-9
overall, 0-6 in the Mid-Southern Conference); Mitchell (1-8 overall, 1-4
in the Patoka Lake Conference).
Sagarin Ratings:
Eastern
(No. 306 Overall; No. 62 in Class 2A); Mitchell (No. 316 Overall; No. 64
in Class 2A).
Sagarin Game
Prediction:
Mitchell by 11.
Last Week:
Because of their
failure of three 2-point conversions, the Eastern Musketeers fell to 0-9
with a 24-18 loss to Eastern Greene. Mitchell dropped its fifth straight
game, 50-12 at MSC champion Salem.
Regular-Season Meeting:
Did Not
Play.
Next Week:
The winner will face the winner of the Paoli-Eastern Greene
game. A Mitchell win would send the Bluejackets on the road against
either the Rams or the Thunderbirds. If Eastern wins, it would host
Paoli or go to Eastern Greene.
Last Year:
In its first sectional game in school history, Eastern lost to eventual
sectional champion Providence, 62-15. The Bluejackets beat Eastern
Greene in the first round before falling to Providence, 28-0 in the
semifinal round.
The “Inside” Scoop:
Eastern has a serious shot at ending its 18-game losing streak.
Scoop’s Pick:
Mitchell 23, Eastern 20.

Semifinal
Winners
Favorite:
Brownstown Central. The Braves are finally playing
like we expected them to all season. However, the
favorite will be decided in Round 1, after the
Brownstown Central-Providence matchup.
Darkhorse:
Paoli. The 8-1 Rams are likely to be in the
championship game. After that, anything can happen.
Best
Player: Ethan Cook, Providence. Although Brownstown
Central has three players who could qualify for this
category, it's hard to argue with Cook, who has rushed
for 1,673 yards and 17 touchdowns in eight games.
X-Factor:
The Wing-T. The teams that executes it best in the
Brownstown-Providence matchup will likely come out as
Sectional 31 champions.
Scoop's
Picks
First
Round:
Eastern 23,
Mitchell 20; Paoli 56, Eastern Greene 7; Indian Creek
44, Clarksville 32; Brownstown Central 28, Providence
20.
Semifinals: Paoli 48, Eastern 0; Brownstown Central
56, Indian Creek 13.
Championship: Brownstown Central 31, Paoli 21.
The
"Inside" Scoop: This sectional will be
decided by the opening week matchup between Brownstown
and Providence. The only other possibility is that Paoli
earns a very serious upset in the title game.

MUSKETEERS
CAN'T CONVERT
Eastern loses
a heartbreaker in its season finale, 24-18 to Eastern
Greene
There was
only one difference between Eastern and its Week 9
opponent on Friday.
While Eastern
Greene converted on three point-after attempts, the
Musketeers went 0-for-3 and fell to 0-0 with a 24-18
loss.
The
Musketeers had season highs with passing yards (143) and
total yards (262) and nearly pulled off its first win of
the season.
Quarterback
Michael Givans kicked off the scoring with 3:59 left in
the first quarter on a 10-yard run, but the Thunderbirds
countered with a TD and 2-point conversion with :02
remaining in the half to take a 8-6 lead into the locker
room.
After Eastern
Greene took a 16-6 lead midway through the third
quarter, the Musketeers used a quick strike to cut into
the Thunderbirds' lead when Givans hit Ryan Tandy on an
82-yard pass to get Eastern within four points.
After Eastern
Greene took a 24-12 lead later in the third, Givans
struck again on a 65-yard pass to Michael Dunn to cut
the Thunderbirds' lead to 24-18 early in the fourth
quarter.
Givans had a
season-high 143 yards on 3 of 5 passing. He also led the
Musketeers with 59 rushing yards.
Defensively,
Nathaniel Hurst had a team-high 14 tackles and had an
interception. Michael Taylor added 12. Tandy had
Eastern's other interception.
The two teams
will both compete in Class 2A's Sectional 31 next
Friday. The Musketeers go to Mitchell to face a 1-8
Blujackets team that fell to Salem, 50-12 on Friday.
The
Thunderbirds (2-7) go to Paoli on the same night. The
Rams are 8-1 and lost their first game of the season,
28-0 to Perry Central on Friday.

BRAVES EARN SHARE OF CONFERENCE TITLE
Brownstown clinches MSC crown for first time
since 2005
Coach Reed May's Brownstown Central team has
come a long way.
Once dominant in the Mid-Southern
Conference, no Braves team had won a league
crown since 2005. On Friday, they did that
with a 55-0 win over Eastern.
It's come a long way this year, as well,
having won five straight games after a 28-24
loss to fellow-tri-champion Charlestown on
Aug. 29 in Week 2.
On Friday, Brownstown made sure early that
it would capture the title it has longed to
have for three years.
The Braves scored 14 points in the first
quarter and 21 more in the second to bury
the winless Musketeers.
Cam Cockerham completed 10 of 14 passes for
274 yards and two touchdowns to Blaze
Hurley, and one apiece to Stuart Robison and
Christian Peters.
Hurley finished with 88 yards receiving.
Defensively, Caleb Silvers led the Braves
with five tackles.
Ryan Tandy was Eastern's top offensive
performer with 45 yards on 13 carries.
The Braves close out their regular season
next Friday against 5-3 West Washington. The
Senators are one of Southern Indiana's
hottest teams, having won three games in a
row. Their 49-14 win over Mitchell on Friday
marked the third straight game in which they
scored at least 46 points.
On the same night, Eastern will attempt to
pick up its first win when it hosts Eastern
Greene. The Thunderbirds are 1-7 after a
49-24 loss to unbeaten Paoli on Friday.

SALEM TOPS MUSKETEERS, 44-0
Lions explode for 25 second-quarter points
After leading Eastern 6-0 after the first
period, Salem broke the game open against
its Washington County rival with a 25-point
second period.
