RED DEVILS

Class 5A, Sectional 8

Hoosier Hills Conference

CLASS 5A, SECTIONAL 8 PREVIEW

October 24, 2008

Looking Ahead

CLASS 5A, SECTIONAL 8

First-Round Opponent: Jennings County

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: At Jennings County High School in North Vernon

Records: Jeffersonville (4-5 overall, 3-4 in the Hoosier Hills Conference); Jennings County (0-9 overall, 0-7 in the Hoosier Hills Conference).

Sagarin Ratings: Jeffersonville (No. 117 Overall; No. 51 in Class 5A); Jennings County (No. 243 Overall; No. 63 in Class 5A).

Sagarin Game Prediction: Jeffersonville by 23.

Last Week: In the first of two meetings, the Red Devils had little problem defeating the Panthers, 35-7.

Next Week: The winner will face the winner of the Floyd Central-Bedford North Lawrence game. If Jeffersonville wins, it will host Bedford North Lawrence or go to Floyd Central. If Jennings County wins, it would go on the road for its second-round matchup, no matter which team wins the FC-BNL contest.

Last Year: Jeff won its first sectional championship in nine years. The Red Devils did not face Jennings County, which lost in the first round against Evansville North, during its run to the sectional crown.

The “Inside” Scoop: Jeffersonville should get another easy win this week. The sectional road looks good for Jeff in its attempt to win its second straight sectional championship.

Scoop’s Pick: Jeffersonville 29, Jennings County 12.

Sectional 8 Schedule

First Round

Evansville North (3-6) at Castle (7-2)

Jeffersonville (4-5) at Jennings County (0-9)

Floyd Central (5-4) at Bedford North Lawrence (6-3)

Semifinals

New Albany (6-3) at Evansville North/Castle Winner

Jeffersonville/Jennings County Winner vs. Floyd Central/Bedford North Lawrence Winner

Championship

Semifinal Winners

Favorite: Castle. This sectional is truly wide open between four teams -- the Knights, Jeffersonville, New Albany and Bedford North Lawrence -- but Castle has the best 2008 resume.

Darkhorse: Floyd Central. The Highlanders' Week 9 win over New Albany showed that they have grown up this season and can play with any team in Sectional 8.

Best Player: Jamie Goldsmith, Jeffersonville. Like picking the sectional champion, this is a toss up between players like Graham Saiko (Castle QB), Edward Baker (Jeff QB) and Graham Brown (New Albany QB), but Goldsmith has the ability to make game-breaking plays at any time.

X-Factor: Brett Martin. Martin, a first-year WR for New Albany, is a great possession receiver with the ability to stretch the field. In combination with Trevor Gordon and Pierre Blackmon, New Albany has a scary passing game that could lead the Bulldogs to their first sectional crown since 2002.

Scoop's Picks

First Round: Castle 42, Evansville North 7; Jeffersonville 29, Jennings County 12; Bedford North Lawrence 31, Floyd Central 17.

Semifinals: Castle 21, New Albany 13; Jeffersonville 28, Bedford North Lawrence 21.

Championship: Castle 30, Jeffersonville 26.

The "Inside" Scoop: I have a hard time picking against defending champion Jeffersonville, now that the Red Devils are healthy. But they have been so inconsistent all season, I wouldn't trust my pick. Castle has been the most consistent team in the sectional, so I give them a slight edge over Jeff, New Albany and BNL.

JEFF WINS SECTIONAL PREVIEW

Red Devils beat Jennings County, 35-7; Meets Them Again Next Friday

In a preview of next Friday's Sectional 8 first round, Jeffersonville had little problem in defeating winless Jennings County, 35-7 on Friday.

Jeffersonville broke open a close game with 21 points in the second quarter, led by Jamie Goldsmith, who had a game-high 189 yards on 14 carries. He scored three times -- on runs of 20, 26 and 75 yards.

Goldsmith became Jeff's all-time single-season rushing leader with 1,823 yards. He needs 245 yards in the playoffs to become Jeffersonville's all-time career rushing leader.

Jeff's other two touchdowns came on passes from Edward Baker to Tyler Ray and Adam Parella. Parella -- in his first game back from an injury -- scored Jeff's only first-quarter points on a 38-yard reception.

Defensively, the Red Devils were led by Bryson Florence, who had eight tackles and a quarterback sack-and-a-half.

The Panthers scored its touchdown in the fourth quarter on an 1-yard run by Justin Baldwin, his first score of the season.

Matt Walker had a game-high 10 tackles and a quarterback sack for the Panther defense.

EAST EARNS FIFTH STRAIGHT HHC CROWN

Olympians score 34 straight points in another big win

By scoring 34 consecutive points, Columbus East became the first Hoosier Hills Conference team ever to win a fifth straight HHC title.

In the past four years, the Olympians have won three outright titles and tied with Bedford North Lawrence in 2006. East meets the Stars next Friday to try to avoid a three-way tie with BNL and New Albany.

Jeffersonville recovered its own onside kick on the opening kickoff and drove for the game's first points, which culminated in a Jamie Goldsmith 13-yard TD run.

It was the first time all season an opponents has scored a first-quarter touchdown against the Olympians.

They responded immediately and then slowed pulled away from the Red Devils.

By the end of the first quarter, East led 14-6 after Dusty Kiel completed TD passes to Dywice Wilson (19 yards) and Shane Henderson (five yards).

The Olympians scored a TD in each of the next three periods. Kiel had a hand in all five East scores.

In the second period, the 2007 ITG "Player of the Year," scored on a 5-yard run. Early in the third quarter, he hit Wilson on an 80-yard TD pass. Then, in the fourth, he ran one in from eight yards out.

Kiel finished with 228 yards and three touchdowns passing and 128 yards and two scores on the ground.

Wilson caught six passes for 169 yards and two scores.

Defensively, the Olympians held Jeff to 234 total yards and just 12 first downs. They held Goldsmith, an All-State candidate, to just 69 yards on 18 carries.

Anthony Miller had two more interceptions on defense and now leads East with five. Devon Davis had 10 tackles, four tackles for loss and blocked kick.

Caleb Browner and Bryson Florence led the Jeff defense with nine tackles apiece. Ryan Pierce had eight tackles, a tackle for loss and two passes defended.

Jeffersonville (3-5) completes its regular season next Friday at Jennings County. The Red Devils face the winless Panthers two next two weeks, with the second being the first round of Sectional 8 play

Bedford North Lawrence -- East's final regular-season opponents -- won its fifth fourth game, 47-7 over Madison on Friday. The Stars are 6-2.

NEW ALBANY KICKS RED DEVILS

Litzelswope field goal helps Bulldogs past Jeffersonville

Zach Litzelswope kicked a 22-yard game-winning field goal with :49 remaining to lift New Albany to a 31-28 win over rival Jeffersonville on Friday.

Edward Baker scored on a 1-yard run in the final stanza to pull Jeffersonville even at 28, but Graham Brown led the Bulldogs on a game-winning 86-yard drive that culminated in Litzelswope's clutch kick.

Brown had an outstanding game. He completed 14 of 22 passes for 282 yards and four scores. He also led the Bulldogs with 36 yards on the ground.

Jeffersonville score the game's initial touchdown on a Jamie Goldsmith 48-yard reception from Baker. Brown countered with an 83-yard TD pass to Trevor Gordon early in the second period. Later in the period, New Albany took its first lead when Brown and Graham hooked up again on a 25-yard pass.

Caleb Browner then intercepted a Brown pass late in the half and returned it 20 yards for a score. However, the Red Devils failed on their PAT and the Bulldogs led 14-13 at the half.

A Baker to Goldsmith 43-yard TD pass gave Jeff the lead again at 19-14. A Baker 2-point run gave the Devils a 21-14 advantage.

Once again, Brown pulled New Albany even. This time, he threw a 3-yard TD pass to Pierre Blackmon.

Brown threw his fourth TD pass to Brett Martin -- from 22 yards out -- to draw first blood in the fourth quarter and to give New Albany a 28-21 lead.

New Albany (5-2) hosts Seymour on Friday. The Owls are 3-4 after a 33-6 win over Jennings County on Friday. The victory ended an Owl two-game losing streak.

Jeff (3-4) has the unenviable task of taking on Columbus East on the same night. After a 75-14 victory over Madison on Friday, the No. 1 Olympians have outscored their opponents by an average of 46 points per game.s
