PANTHERS

Class 5A, Sectional 8

Hoosier Hills Conference

CLASS 5A, SECTIONAL 8 PREVIEW

Sectional 8 Schedule

First Round

Evansville North (3-6) at Castle (7-2)

Jeffersonville (4-5) at Jennings County (0-9)

Floyd Central (5-4) at Bedford North Lawrence (6-3)

Semifinals

New Albany (6-3) at Evansville North/Castle Winner

Jeffersonville/Jennings County Winner vs. Floyd Central/Bedford North Lawrence Winner

Championship

Semifinal Winners

Favorite: Castle. This sectional is truly wide open between four teams -- the Knights, Jeffersonville, New Albany and Bedford North Lawrence -- but Castle has the best 2008 resume.

Darkhorse: Floyd Central. The Highlanders' Week 9 win over New Albany showed that they have grown up this season and can play with any team in Sectional 8.

Best Player: Jamie Goldsmith, Jeffersonville. Like picking the sectional champion, this is a toss up between players like Graham Saiko (Castle QB), Edward Baker (Jeff QB) and Graham Brown (New Albany QB), but Goldsmith has the ability to make game-breaking plays at any time.

X-Factor: Brett Martin. Martin, a first-year WR for New Albany, is a great possession receiver with the ability to stretch the field. In combination with Trevor Gordon and Pierre Blackmon, New Albany has a scary passing game that could lead the Bulldogs to their first sectional crown since 2002.

Scoop's Picks

First Round: Castle 42, Evansville North 7; Jeffersonville 29, Jennings County 12; Bedford North Lawrence 31, Floyd Central 17.

Semifinals: Castle 21, New Albany 13; Jeffersonville 28, Bedford North Lawrence 21.

Championship: Castle 30, Jeffersonville 26.

The "Inside" Scoop: I have a hard time picking against defending champion Jeffersonville, now that the Red Devils are healthy. But they have been so inconsistent all season, I wouldn't trust my pick. Castle has been the most consistent team in the sectional, so I give them a slight edge over Jeff, New Albany and BNL.

JEFF WINS SECTIONAL PREVIEW

Red Devils beat Jennings County, 35-7; Meets Them Again Next Friday

In a preview of next Friday's Sectional 8 first round, Jeffersonville had little problem in defeating winless Jennings County, 35-7 on Friday.

Jeffersonville broke open a close game with 21 points in the second quarter, led by Jamie Goldsmith, who had a game-high 189 yards on 14 carries. He scored three times -- on runs of 20, 26 and 75 yards.

Goldsmith became Jeff's all-time single-season rushing leader with 1,823 yards. He needs 245 yards in the playoffs to become Jeffersonville's all-time career rushing leader.

Jeff's other two touchdowns came on passes from Edward Baker to Tyler Ray and Adam Parella. Parella -- in his first game back from an injury -- scored Jeff's only first-quarter points on a 38-yard reception.

Defensively, the Red Devils were led by Bryson Florence, who had eight tackles and a quarterback sack-and-a-half.

The Panthers scored its touchdown in the fourth quarter on an 1-yard run by Justin Baldwin, his first score of the season.

Matt Walker had a game-high 10 tackles and a quarterback sack for the Panther defense.

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: At Jennings County High School in North Vernon

Records: Jeffersonville (3-5 overall, 2-4 in the Hoosier Hills Conference); Jennings County (0-8 overall, 0-6 in the Hoosier Hills Conference).

Sagarin Ratings: Jeffersonville (No. 121 Overall; No. 54 in Class 5A); Jennings County (No. 240 Overall; No. 63 in Class 5A).

Sagarin Game Prediction: Jeffersonville by 20.

Last Week: Jeff scored the game’s first touchdown, but gave up 34 consecutive points to No. 1 and five-time HHC champion Columbus East in a 34-6 loss. Jennings County fell to 0-8 after a 31-12 loss to Floyd Central. Ryan Stearns had 101 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

Last Year vs. Jeffersonville: Jeffersonville recovered from a 35-0 loss to Columbus East in an HHC title showdown to defeat the Panthers, 40-7.

Last 10 Years vs. Jeffersonville: Jeffersonville 8-2. The Red Devils have beaten Jennings three straight times.

The “Inside” Scoop: This could be the start of a sectional championship run for Jeffersonville. Don’t count the Devils out.

Scoop’s Pick: Jeffersonville 32, Jennings County 16.

HIGHLANDERS SNAP LOSING STREAK

Floyd improves to 4-4 with 31-12 win over Jennings County

Daniel Deerr rushed for 136 yards on offense and Matt Lowe had 21 tackles, a quarterback sack, two tackles for loss and an interception return for a touchdown to lead Floyd Central to a 31-12 win over Jennings County.

The victory gets the Highlanders back to .500 and ended a four-game losing streak.

Deerr got things started early for Floyd with a 34-yard TD run in the first quarter.

After Cole Richards hit a season-best 42-yard field goal to give FC a 10-0 lead, Lowe intercepted a Kevin Collinsworth pass and returned it 13 yards to give the Highlanders a 17-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, TD runs by Patrick Uhl and Max Guenther guaranteed the Highlander triumph.

Between those two scores, Collinsworth hooked up with Ryan Stearns twice on TD passes -- from 21 and four yards out.

Collinsworth completed 14 of 24 passes for 250 yards. Stearns caught eight passes for 101 yards.

Collinsworth also had three tackles, an interception and two fumble recoveries on defense. Matt Walker led the Panther defense with five solo tackles and eight assists.

The Highlanders finish their regular season next Friday at home against Floyd County-rival New Albany. The Bulldogs improved to 6-2 with a 48-41 triple-overtime win over Seymour on Friday. New Albany still has an outside shot at its first Hoosier Hills Conference title since 2002 with a win and a Columbus East loss to Bedford North Lawrence.

The Panthers will face Jeffersonville the next two weeks. They face the 3-5 Red Devils at home in both the regular-season finale two weeks from now and in a Sectional 8 first-round matchup in two weeks. Jeff lost to top-ranked Columbus East, 34-6 on Friday.

OWL DEFENSE DOMINATED

Seymour offense comes alive in second half of 33-6 win over Jennings County

Seymour's defense dominated Jennings County in a 33-6 win over the Panthers.

Brandon Polbito made sure the Owl defensive effort wasn't in vain.

Polbito scored Seymour's first three touchdowns, on runs of three, 11 and 17 yards. Polbito led all rushers with 112 yards on 20 carries. He also caught two passes for 29 yards.

Polbito was also a star on the Owl defense, which allowed just six first downs and 90 total yards. He had three tackles and both of Seymour's interceptions.

Jennings County took the lead early on a 31-yard first-quarter TD run by Dyvon Bass. Polbito tied the score at six on a 3-yard run with just :37 left in the first half.

Polbito then scored twice in the second half to break the game open.

A Chad Moore-to-Kevin Ude TD pass and a 51-yard Jacob Carmichael punt return in the fourth quarter gave the Owls a 20-point quarter and the 33-6 victory. Carmichael also led the Owls with 69 receiving yards.

Bass led the Panthers with 50 yards on the ground. Matt Walker led the Jennings defense with 16 tackles.

Seymour goes to New Albany next Friday to face a 5-2 Bulldog team. New Albany beat rival Jeffersonville, 31-28 on Friday, for their fourth win in five games.

The Panthers will try to win their first game of the season the same night when they host Floyd Central. The Highlanders lost their fourth straight game, 35-7 to Bedford North Lawrence on Friday.
