CUBS

Class 4A, Sectional 15

Hoosier Hills Conference

October 24, 2008

Looking Ahead

CLASS 4A, SECTIONAL 15

First-Round Opponent: South Dearborn

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: At Madison High School

Records: South Dearborn (3-6 overall, 1-4 in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference); Madison (1-8 overall, 1-6 in the Hoosier Hills Conference).

Sagarin Ratings: South Dearborn (No. 203 Overall; No. 47 in Class 4A); Madison (No. 233 Overall; No. 56 in Class 4A).

Sagarin Game Prediction: Madison by 1.

Last Week: Madison fell to 1-8 after a 35-7 loss to HHC rival Seymour after a close first half. South Dearborn fell to 3-6 after a 42-14 loss against 6-3 Muncie South.

Regular-Season Meeting: South Dearborn topped the Cubs, 31-27, on a hail-Mary touchdown pass with no time left on the clock.

Next Week: The winner will face the winner of the Columbus East-Seymour game. If Madison wins, it would host East or go to Seymour. A South Dearborn victory would have the Knights at home against either the Olympians or the Owls.

Last Year: South Dearborn ended Madison’s season with a 36-7 first-round Sectional 15 victory in Madison. The Knights lost the following week to then-unbeaten Shelbyville, 41-13.

The “Inside” Scoop: Everything points to a Madison win this week. The Cubs have come a long way since their earlier heartbreaking loss to South Dearborn.

Scoop’s Pick: Madison 26, South Dearborn 19.

CLASS 4A, SECTIONAL 15 PREVIEW

Sectional 15 Schedule

First Round

Franklin County (1-8) at Shelbyville (8-1)

East Central (8-1) at Connersville (1-8)

Seymour (4-5) at Columbus East (9-0)

South Dearborn (3-6) at Madison (1-8)

Semifinals

Franklin County/Shelbyville Winner vs. East Central/Connersville Winner

Seymour/Columbus East Winner vs. South Dearborn/Madison Winner

Championship

Semifinal Winners

Favorite: Columbus East. As much of a favorite as a favorite can be.

Darkhorse: East Central. In a normal year, the 8-1 Trojans would be a favorite to win a sectional -- if not more. This season, however, they have to hope for a miracle against No. 1 East.

Best Player: Dusty Kiel. If the voters in Indiana are sane, the Olympians' senior quarterback is the hands-down Mr. Football. Unfortunately, they're not sane.

X-Factor: Columbus East's health. This is the only thing I can think of that could stop the Olympians. They have had some healthy issues and injuries probably stopped them from winning the 2007 4A championship.

Scoop's Picks

First Round: Shelbyville 41, Franklin County 14; East Central 43, Connersville 12; Columbus East 45, Seymour 7; Madison 26, South Dearborn 19.

Semifinals: East Central 22, Shelbyville 13; Columbus East 55, Madison 7.

Championship: Columbus East 42, East Central 14.

The "Inside" Scoop: Not much needs to be said; East in a landslide.

OWLS FINISH ON UPSWING

Seymour downs Madison, 35-7 with big second half

Seymour's offense wracked up 427 total yards and score 28 second-half points to defeat Madison, 35-7 on Friday.

Brandon Polbito scored three touchdowns, two on passes from Chad Moore and one on a 34-yard fourth-quarter run. Polbito finished with 182 total yards from scrimmage.

Polbito also led a Seymour defense, which allowed just one scored despite surrendering 429 Madison yards, with eight tackles. He also had an interception. Maxx Fisher had four tackles, three tackles for loss and a quarterback sack. Eric Barger added four tackles and two quarterback sacks.

Madison's lone score came on a Trey Thurston 9-yard run in the third quarter to cut the Owls' lead to 13-7.

The Owls travel to Columbus next Friday to face No. 1 East in the first round of Sectional 15 play. The Olympians went unbeaten the regular season after a 44-6 win over Bedford North Lawrence on Friday.

Madison hosts 3-6 South Dearborn in Sectional 15 on the same night. The Knights lost their second game in a row on Friday, 42-14 to Muncie South.

STARS SET UP HHC TITLE MATCH

With a 47-7 win over Madison, BNL gives itself title hopes

After a 47-7 win over Madison on Friday, Bedford North Lawrence will host Columbus East next Friday for a shot at a share of the Hoosier Hills Conference title.

It's a situation similar to 2006, when the Stars upset the Olympians to tie for the HHC crown.

But it couldn't have happened without four straight impressive victories, including another stellar performance on Friday.

Or, more appropriately, an outstanding four minutes.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Stars broke on top early in the second quarter on a Logan Brown 11-yard TD run.

Then, BNL went on a run rarely equaled, scoring 37 points in the next four minutes of play.

After its fourth trip into Madison's red zone ended with a 22-yard Erik Moorman field goal to give the Stars a 10-0 lead, Brad Carrico intercepted a Zach Zehren pass and returned it to the Madison 2-yard-line. On the next play -- as the halftime buzzer sounded -- Brown carried the ball in for a 16-0 lead. An ensuing Moorman PAT gave the Stars a 17-0 halftime lead.

The momentum clearly carried over into the thid quarter, where BNL scored 30 points on four touchdowns and a safety. Twenty-three of those points came in the first 3:56 of the period. Star QB Jacob Perry threw touchdowns to Carrico and Brown and ran two in himself in the third quarter.

Perry completed 4 of 7 passes for 91 yards and two scores. He also carried the ball 10 times for a season-high 205 yards and two more touchdowns. Brown had 94 total yards with three scores.

Ryan Fish scored Madison's lone TD on a 44-yard run in the fourth quarter. He finished with 81 yards on six carries.

The championship task won't be easy. East hasn't lost in the HHC since the 2006 defeat to the Stars. In fact, Friday's 34-6 win over Jeffersonville clinched the Olympians' at least a share of their fifth straight league crown. No team in HHC history had done that before Class 4A, No. 1 East did it on Friday.

Madison finishes its regular season next Friday at Seymour. The Owls fell to 3-5 after a 48-41 triple-overtime loss to New Albany on Friday.
