BULLDOGS

Class 5A, Sectional 8

Hoosier Hills Conference

CLASS 5A, SECTIONAL 8 PREVIEW

Sectional 8 Schedule

First Round

Evansville North (3-6) at Castle (7-2)

Jeffersonville (4-5) at Jennings County (0-9)

Floyd Central (5-4) at Bedford North Lawrence (6-3)

Semifinals

New Albany (6-3) at Evansville North/Castle Winner

Jeffersonville/Jennings County Winner vs. Floyd Central/Bedford North Lawrence Winner

Championship

Semifinal Winners

Favorite: Castle. This sectional is truly wide open between four teams -- the Knights, Jeffersonville, New Albany and Bedford North Lawrence -- but Castle has the best 2008 resume.

Darkhorse: Floyd Central. The Highlanders' Week 9 win over New Albany showed that they have grown up this season and can play with any team in Sectional 8.

Best Player: Jamie Goldsmith, Jeffersonville. Like picking the sectional champion, this is a toss up between players like Graham Saiko (Castle QB), Edward Baker (Jeff QB) and Graham Brown (New Albany QB), but Goldsmith has the ability to make game-breaking plays at any time.

X-Factor: Brett Martin. Martin, a first-year WR for New Albany, is a great possession receiver with the ability to stretch the field. In combination with Trevor Gordon and Pierre Blackmon, New Albany has a scary passing game that could lead the Bulldogs to their first sectional crown since 2002.

Scoop's Picks

First Round: Castle 42, Evansville North 7; Jeffersonville 29, Jennings County 12; Bedford North Lawrence 31, Floyd Central 17.

Semifinals: Castle 21, New Albany 13; Jeffersonville 28, Bedford North Lawrence 21.

Championship: Castle 30, Jeffersonville 26.

The "Inside" Scoop: I have a hard time picking against defending champion Jeffersonville, now that the Red Devils are healthy. But they have been so inconsistent all season, I wouldn't trust my pick. Castle has been the most consistent team in the sectional, so I give them a slight edge over Jeff, New Albany and BNL.

HIGHLANDERS UPSET COUNTY RIVAL

Floyd Central wins come-from-behind 35-34 victory

After Pierre Blackmon returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, Floyd Central was playing catch up to county-rival New Albany all night on Friday.

In the final game at Scott Fields -- home to the Highlanders for over 40 years -- Daniel Deerr scored on a 28-yard run with 2:49 remaining to give Floyd Central its first lead at 35-34. Floyd held on for the final minutes for its second straight win and a 5-4 mark heading into next week's sectional opener.

New Albany led 13-0 after just four minutes when Graham Brown added a 1-yard run to Blackmon's kickoff return.

Melvin Posey then scored twice in the second quarter -- on runs of 11 and 15 yards -- to give the Bulldogs a 27-14 halftime lead.

Posey's third touchdown gave New Albany a 34-21 lead at the end of three quarters. Early in the final period, Aaron Sparks scored his third touchdown on an 11-yard run, setting up Deerr's late-game heroics.

Sparks led a Highlander rushing attack that yielded 371 yards. Sparks had a game-high 201 yards. Deerr added 72.

Graham Brown had another big game for the Bulldog offense, completing 9 of 20 passes for 301 yards. Brett Martin caught six of those passes for 136 yards.

The Highlanders go back to Bedford North Lawrence next Friday to face the 6-2 Stars in Sectional 8 action. BNL missed out on a shot at the Hoosier Hills Conference title with a 44-6 loss to Columbus East on Friday.

After a week off with the Sectional 8 bye, New Albany will go to either Castle or Evansville North in two weeks for a semifinal matchup.

Sagarin Game Prediction: New Albany by 15.

In the win, Graham Brown completed 21 of 34 passes for 321 yards on four touchdowns. Floyd Central snapped its four-game losing streak with a 31-12 victory over Jennings County. BULLDOGS WIN ANOTHER THRILLER

New Albany tops Seymour, 48-41 in three overtimes

New Albany overcame a later Brandon Polbito 106-yard interception return for a touchdown to beat Seymour, 48-41 in triple overtime on Friday.

It was the third straight season the Bulldogs and Owls have gone into overtime, with the home team winning each time.

In the third overtime, Graham Brown scored from two yards out. When it was Seymour's turn to try to send it to a fourth overtime, Greg Burbridge sacked Owl QB Chad Moore to end the thriller.

Brown, who completed 21 of 34 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns, gave New Albany an early 21-7 lead with two TD passes to Trevor Gordon and another to Brett Martin.

Late in the second quarter, Polbito scored his second touchdown to pull the Owls to within 21-14 at the half.

Moore scored from 21 yards out to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 21-20.

Melvin Posey scored on a 9-yard run to give New Albany a 28-20 lead that seemed insurmountable until Polbito's interception return and a Chad Moore 2-point conversion run sent the game into overtime.

Posey finished with 154 yards on 16 carries.

The first overtime saw each team score seven points. In the second, both missed PAT kicks and make the score knotted at 41 heading into the third overtime.

The Bulldogs are 4-1 in games decided by a touchdown or less this season.

New Albany, which still has a shot a tying for the Hoosier Hills Conference title, goes to Floyd Central on Friday. The Highlanders improved to 3-5 and snapped a five-game losing streak with a 31-12 win over Jennings County on Friday.

The Bulldogs need a victory over the Highlanders and a Bedford North Lawrence win over Columbus East to earn their first HHC crown since 2002.

Meanwhile, Seymour finishes its regular season at home against Madison. The Cubs fell to 1-7 with a 47-7 loss to Bedford on Friday.

Looking Ahead

This Week’s Opponent: Seymour

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: At New Albany High School

Records: Seymour (3-4 overall, 3-2 in the Hoosier Hills Conference); New Albany (5-2 overall, 4-1 in the Hoosier Hills Conference).

State Rankings: Seymour (No. 16 AP in Class 4A).

Sagarin Ratings: Seymour (No. 110 Overall; No. 25 in Class 4A); New Albany (No. 79 Overall; No. 41 in Class 5A).

Sagarin Game Prediction: New Albany by 1.

Last Week: Graham Brown threw for four touchdowns and Zach Litzelswope hit a 26-yard field goal with :49 remaining to help New Albany to a 31-28 victory over Jeffersonville. Brandon Polbito scored three touchdowns to help lead the Owls to 33 unanswered points and a 33-6 win over Jennings County.

Last Year vs. Seymour: Brandon Pobito scored on a 1-yard run in overtime, then Trevor Giles intercepted a Graham Brown pass to preserve Seymour’s 42-35 overtime victory. It was the second straight season the two sides went into overtime, with the Bulldogs winning in 2006.

Last 10 Years vs. Seymour: Seymour 6-4. Despite the Owls dominating the overall series, New Albany has won four of the last six meetings. The two teams have split their last four contests.

The “Inside” Scoop: These are two very even teams. I think this game could go into overtime for the third straight year, giving the home team the advantage.

Scoop’s Pick: New Albany 29, Seymour 28.

NEW ALBANY KICKS RED DEVILS

Litzelswope field goal helps Bulldogs past Jeffersonville

Zach Litzelswope kicked a 22-yard game-winning field goal with :49 remaining to lift New Albany to a 31-28 win over rival Jeffersonville on Friday.

Edward Baker scored on a 1-yard run in the final stanza to pull Jeffersonville even at 28, but Graham Brown led the Bulldogs on a game-winning 86-yard drive that culminated in Litzelswope's clutch kick.

Brown had an outstanding game. He completed 14 of 22 passes for 282 yards and four scores. He also led the Bulldogs with 36 yards on the ground.

Jeffersonville score the game's initial touchdown on a Jamie Goldsmith 48-yard reception from Baker. Brown countered with an 83-yard TD pass to Trevor Gordon early in the second period. Later in the period, New Albany took its first lead when Brown and Graham hooked up again on a 25-yard pass.

Caleb Browner then intercepted a Brown pass late in the half and returned it 20 yards for a score. However, the Red Devils failed on their PAT and the Bulldogs led 14-13 at the half.

A Baker to Goldsmith 43-yard TD pass gave Jeff the lead again at 19-14. A Baker 2-point run gave the Devils a 21-14 advantage.

Once again, Brown pulled New Albany even. This time, he threw a 3-yard TD pass to Pierre Blackmon.

Brown threw his fourth TD pass to Brett Martin -- from 22 yards out -- to draw first blood in the fourth quarter and to give New Albany a 28-21 lead.

New Albany (5-2) hosts Seymour on Friday. The Owls are 3-4 after a 33-6 win over Jennings County on Friday. The victory ended an Owl two-game losing streak.

Jeff (3-4) has the unenviable task of taking on Columbus East on the same night. After a 75-14 victory over Madison on Friday, the No. 1 Olympians have outscored their opponents by an average of 46 points per game.s
