PIONEERS

Class 2A, Sectional 31

Independent

October 24, 2008

Looking Ahead

CLASS 2A, SECTIONAL 31

First-Round Opponent: Brownstown Central

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: At Brownstown Central High School

Records: Providence (5-4 overall); Brownstown Central (7-1 overall, 4-1 in the Mid-Southern Conference).

State Rankings: Brownstown Central (No. 13 AP, No. 11 IFCA in Class 2A).

Sagarin Ratings: Providence (No. 165 Overall; No. 25 in Class 2A); Brownstown Central (No. 159 Overall; No. 22 in Class 2A).

Sagarin Game Prediction: Providence by 2.

Last Week: Brownstown Central won its seventh straight game, 41-21 over West Washington. At the same time, the Pioneers improved to 5-4 with a 63-24 victory over rival Clarksville.

Regular-Season Meeting: Did Not Play.

Next Week: The winner will face the winner of the Indian Creek-Clarksville game. If Providence wins, the Pioneers would host either Clarksville or Indian Creek in the semifinal round. With a victory, the Braves would either go to Indian Creek or be at home against Clarksville.

Last Year: Providence beat the Braves – 35-26 in the Sectional 31 title game – to win its first sectional championship in 13 years.

The “Inside” Scoop: I think, when all is said and done, this will be the sectional championship game. Both teams are playing very well, but Brownstown has more talent and more experience.

Scoop’s Pick: Brownstown Central 35, Providence 21.

CLASS 2A, SECTIONAL 31 PREVIEW

Sectional 31 Schedule

First Round

Eastern (0-9) at Mitchell (1-8)

Eastern Greene (2-7) at Paoli (8-1)

Indian Creek (6-3) at Clarksville (3-6)

Providence (5-4) at Brownstown Central (7-1)

Semifinals

Eastern/Mitchell Winner vs. Eastern Greene/Paoli Winner

Indian Creek/Clarksville Winner vs. Providence/Brownstown Central Winner

Championship

Semifinal Winners

Favorite: Brownstown Central. The Braves are finally playing like we expected them to all season. However, the favorite will be decided in Round 1, after the Brownstown Central-Providence matchup.

Darkhorse: Paoli. The 8-1 Rams are likely to be in the championship game. After that, anything can happen.

Best Player: Ethan Cook, Providence. Although Brownstown Central has three players who could qualify for this category, it's hard to argue with Cook, who has rushed for 1,673 yards and 17 touchdowns in eight games.

X-Factor: The Wing-T. The teams that executes it best in the Brownstown-Providence matchup will likely come out as Sectional 31 champions.

Scoop's Picks

First Round: Eastern 23, Mitchell 20; Paoli 56, Eastern Greene 7; Indian Creek 44, Clarksville 32; Brownstown Central 28, Providence 20.

Semifinals: Paoli 48, Eastern 0; Brownstown Central 56, Indian Creek 13.

Championship: Brownstown Central 31, Paoli 21.

The "Inside" Scoop: This sectional will be decided by the opening week matchup between Brownstown and Providence. The only other possibility is that Paoli earns a very serious upset in the title game.

PIONEERS TAKE BACK CITY CHAMPIONSHIP

Providence beats Generals for first time in four years

Providence scored 28 third-quarter points to pull away from city-rival Clarksville and end a four-game losing streak against the Generals with a 63-24 victory on Friday.

In the process, a star was born. With senior back Ethan Cook out, sophomore Spencer Corrao showed that its tradition of top-notch running backs with continue.

Corrao rushed for 283 yards and four touchdowns to help the Pioneers to 35 second-half points.

Shane Sparks added 122 yards for a Providence rushing attack that yielded 529 yards. He also scored three times.

Providence's other touchdown came on a 14-yard second-quarter TD pass from Anthony Denis to Jason Stephany.

Corey Bowens scored three of Clarksville's four touchdowns.

Both teams will participate in Class 2A's Sectional 31, starting this Friday.

Providence faces 7-1 Brownstown Central -- probably the sectional's favorite -- on the road. The Braves won their sixth straight game, 41-21 over West Washington on Friday.

On the same night, Clarksville hosts 6-3 Indian Creek.

Scoop’s Pick: Providence 27, Clarksville 12.

TECUMSEH DUO KEEPS BRAVES UNBEATEN

Providence falls to No. 8 Tecumseh, 47-21

Bryce Speicher and Jacob Duncan combined for 376 yards on 30 carries to lead Tecumseh to a 47-21 win over Providence and to within one victory of its first unbeaten regular season in school history.

The Braves, who are averaging  finished with 46.5 points per game (seventh-best in Indiana), tallied 431 total yards in the victory.

Meanwhile, the Pioneer offense put up some big numbers of their own. Spencer Corrao led a Providence rushing attack that went for 240 yards. He carried the ball 21 times for 146 yards in the loss. Ethen Cook added 67 yards for the Pioneers, who fell behind 14-0 before an Anthony Denis to Steve Burrous 17-yard TD pass got them on the board late in the second quarter.

Tecumseh -- ranked No. 8 in the latest coaches poll -- put the game away with a 20-point second quarter that gave the Braves a 34-13 lead after three.

The Braves will try to finish their season unbeaten next Friday when they travel to Corydon to face a 1-7 Panther squad. Corydon lost to Mid-Southern Conference champion Salem, 51-14 on Friday.

Providence will try to get over .500 heading into the sectional when it faces city-rival Clarksville next Friday. The Generals improved to 3-5 with a 44-20 win over Crawford County on Friday.

LINDSEY PRESERVES JEFF WIN

Interception return gives Devils a 33-20 win over Providence

Up 27-20 with :36 remaining in the game, Jeffersonville was being threatened by a Providence drive that landed it on the 15-yard-line.

That's when Red Devil sophomore Evan Lindsey became a hero.

Lindsey picked off an Anthony Denis pass three yards deep in the end zone and returned it 103 yards for a Jeffersonville touchdown that gave the Red Devils a 33-20 win.

It was Jeff's third straight victory after starting the season 0-3.

The contest featured 92 rushing attempts for 583 yards.

Jeff's Jamie Goldsmith led the way with 277 yards on 38 carries. Providence's Ethan Cook wasn't far behind with 232 yards on 30 carries.

Through three quarter, the two backs alternated touchdowns, Goldsmith rushing for three and Cook two.

Providence then tied the score at 20 when Denis hit Brett Robinson from 17 yards out with just over seven minutes remaining. However, Providence's extra point was blocked by Ryan Pierce and the game remained knotted.

Jeff responded with a four-minute drive that culminated in a Goldsmith 2-yard touchdown. Providence looked to score the equalizing score when Lindsey ended the Pioneers' hopes.

Until the interception, Denis had completed 5 of 7 passes for 95 yards. His counterpart, Edward Baker, rushed for 69 yards and threw for 45 more.

Jeff will try to stay hot next Friday when it hosts 4-2 New Albany. The Bulldogs beat Madison 30-14 on Friday for their third victory in their last four games.

Providence hosts Evansville Bosse on the same night. The Bulldogs are 1-5 -- with a four-game losing streak -- after a 55-22 loss at Castle on Friday.
