LIONS

Class 3A, Sectional 23

Mid-Southern Conference

October 24, 2008

Looking Ahead

CLASS 3A, SECTIONAL 23

First-Round Opponent: Heritage Hills

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: At Salem High School

Records: Heritage Hills (5-3 overall, 4-2 in the Pocket Athletic Conference); Salem (7-2 overall, 5-1 in the Mid-Southern Conference).

Sagarin Ratings: Heritage Hills (No. 135 Overall; No. 22 in Class 3A); Salem (No. 206 Overall; No. 44 in Class 3A).

Sagarin Game Prediction: Heritage Hills by 13.

Last Week: Salem won its fifth straight game, 50-12 over Mitchell. The Lions have won seven of their last eight games and scored 50-plus points in their final two regular-season games. Heritage Hills won its second straight game and kept South Spencer from a share of the PAC championship with a 23-0 victory.

Regular-Season Meeting: Did Not Play.

Next Week: The winner will face the winner of the North Harrison-Charlestown game. A Salem win would send the Lions on the road for the semifinal game against either the Cougars or the Pirates. If Heritage Hills wins, the Patriots would host Charlestown or go to Salisbury to face North Harrison.

Last Year: The Patriots beat Salem, 42-12, on their way to their seventh sectional championship in eight years.

The “Inside” Scoop: As much as I want to pick Salem, I can’t. But the bottom line is this: they have a shot at knocking off Heritage Hills. That’s not something anyone would have thought coming into the season.

Scoop’s Pick: Heritage Hills 18, Salem 13.

CLASS 3A, SECTIONAL 23 PREVIEW

Sectional 23 Schedule

First Round

Heritage Hills (5-3) at Salem (7-2)

North Harrison (3-5) at Charlestown (6-3)

Edgewood (8-1) at Corydon Central (1-8)

Crawford County (4-5) at Brown County (1-8)

Semifinals

Heritage Hills/Salem Winner vs. North Harrison/Charlestown Winner

Edgewood/Corydon Central Winner vs. Crawford County/Brown County Winner

Championship

Semifinal Winners

Favorite: Heritage Hills. Despite being in a rebuilding season, the Patriots' tradition speaks loudly. Plus, HH faces -- by far -- the toughest schedule of any team in Sectional 23.

Darkhorse: Edgewood. Once again, the Mustangs got a favorable draw. Senior QB Josh Collier gives Edgewood at shot at winning any game in this tournament.

Best Player: Cameron Metzger, Charlestown. The Pirate senior was easily the best player in this sectional until an early-season knee injury. He's back. If he's back near 100%, Charlestown has a great shot at winning its first sectional since 1996.

X-Factor: Heritage Hills. It's really hard to tell just how good the Patriots are. They have lost to some inferior teams, but they beat a very good team in South Spencer, 23-0, in Week 9.

Scoop's Picks

First Round: Heritage Hills 18, Salem 13; Charlestown 40, North Harrison 14; Edgewood 49, Corydon Central 12; Crawford County 32, Brown County 14.

Semifinals: Heritage Hills 35, Charlestown 27; Edgewood 50, Crawford County 16.

Championship: Heritage Hills 42, Edgewood 21.

The "Inside" Scoop: Oh, so much to say about this sectional. 1.) Heritage Hills is still the favorite, but the Patriots are vulnerable -- good news for Charlestown and Salem; 2.) Edgewood is solid and will have little problem getting to the championship game for the second straight year. If things fall right, the Mustangs could win their first sectional title since 1990; 3.) Salem is a legit contender. As good as the Lion defense is, Salem will be in any game. 4.) Crawford County is going to win five games this season. Just how amazing is that? Can you say, "Team of the Future." 5.) After saying all of that, Heritage Hills will still probably win Sectional 23.

HOT SALEM WHIPS MITCHELL

Lions strong on offense and defense in 50-12 victory

Mid-Southern Conference champion Salem stayed hot on Friday by beating Mitchell, 50-12, for its fifth straight victory heading into tournament play next Friday.

The Lions wracked up 163 points over their last four games. On Friday, they played one of their best defensive games of the season, holding the Bluejackets to 102 total yards -- most of which came after the game had already been decided -- and just four first downs.

Kreigh Holstine led the Salem defense once again. He had four tackles and a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown in limited play. Zak Bills had a team-high six tackles, including four solos.

Offensively, Eric Zink rushed for 100 yards for the second straight game. He was one of three Lions to score via the ground game. Jarod Farmer and Holstine were the others.

Rhett Huffaker scored on a blocked punt that he returned 11 yards for a score in the Lions' 22-point second quarter.

Salem takes its hot streak into Sectional 23 play against defending sectional champion Heritage Hills next Friday. The Patriots improved to 5-3 with a 23-0 win over South Spencer on Friday. The Patriots won three of their final four games to salvage a decent season for one of the state's most traditionally-rich programs.

Mitchell (1-8) hosts winless Eastern in the first round of Sectional 31 play next Friday. The Musketeers lost their 18th straight game, 24-18 against Eastern Greene in a closely-contested game on Friday.

SALEM WINS BIG MID-SOUTHERN CONTEST

Lions top defending champion Charlestown, 18-13

Salem pulled even with Charlestown in the Mid-Southern Conference race with an 18-13 win over Charlestown on Friday.

Both teams are 4-1 -- and on top of the league standings -- after the Lions won their third straight game and fifth of their last six contests.

Both sides need two MSC wins to clinch their share of the league crown.

The Lions took a decisive 18-7 lead after a long drive in the fourth quarter when Jarod Farmer scored from five yards out.

Charlestown countered with a score with :01 left in the contest, but it was too late.

After a scoreless first quarter, Salem broke on top on a Christian Chastain TD run early in the second quarter.

After Charlestown took the lead on a Michael Baines run and an Ariel Stephens PAT with 4:41 left in the half, Salem struck back with a TD late in the second period. Chastain hit Logan Walker on a 7-yard TD pass with :13 to go in the half to give the Lions a 12-7 halftime lead.

Charlestown outgained the Lions 333 to 198. Josh Graham led all players with 169 total yards.

Justin Beavers had 63 yards on the ground for Salem.

Both teams will try to stay atop the MSC next Friday.

That night, Salem hosts 1-7 Corydon Central, which lost to unbeaten Paoli, 47-6 on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Pirates hosts North Harrison. The Cougars stayed in the MSC race with a 45-18 win over winless Eastern on Friday.

Sagarin Game Prediction: Charlestown by 7.

Last Week: Josh Graham scored seven touchdowns – six in the first half – in Charlestown’s 55-26 win over Corydon Central. Salem warmed up for this week’s big MSC contest with a 44-0 win over Eastern.

Last Year vs. Charlestown: Charlestown clinched its first Mid-Southern Conference title in nine years with a 27-6 win over the Lions. Cameron Metzger rushed for 210 yards and scored three times for the Pirates.

Last 10 Years vs. Charlestown: 5-5. Until last year’s victory, the Pirates had lost to Salem five straight times.

Scoop’s Pick: Charlestown 21, Salem 19.

SALEM TOPS MUSKETEERS, 44-0

Lions explode for 25 second-quarter points

After leading Eastern 6-0 after the first period, Salem broke the game open against its Washington County rival with a 25-point second period.

Christian Chastain threw two second-quarter TD passes -- 41 yards to Robert Baker and 21 yards to Cody Crady -- to help give the Lions a 31-0 halftime lead.

Chastain, who came into the game with just one TD pass, threw for four against the Musekteers. He also ran for a first quarter score. He completed six of his eight passing attempts for 122 yards.

Crady caught two of the TD passes, his only two receptions in the game.

Salem has a big one on Friday when the Lions host Charlestown in what basically amounts to a Mid-Southern Conference title game. The Pirates are 4-0 in the MSC and 5-1 overall after a 55-26 win over Corydon Central.

Eastern will try to pick up its first win when it goes to North Harrison to face a 3-2 North Harrison squad. The Cougars beat Clarksville, 36-30 in the final minute on Friday.
