OWLS
Class 4A,
Sectional 15
Hoosier Hills
Conference
October 24, 2008
Looking Ahead
CLASS 4A, SECTIONAL 15
First-Round Opponent:
Columbus
East
Time:
7 p.m.
Location:
At Columbus East High
School
Records:
Seymour (4-5
overall, 4-3 in the Hoosier Hills Conference); Columbus East (9-0
overall, 7-0 in the Hoosier Hills Conference).
State Rankings:
Columbus East
(No. 1 AP, No. 1 IFCA in Class 4A).
Sagarin Ratings:
Seymour
(No. 121 Overall; No. 29 in Class 4A); Columbus East (No. 6 Overall; No.
2 in Class 4A).
Sagarin Game
Prediction:
East by 29.
Last Week:
Columbus East won
the HHC championship outright with a 44-6 win over Bedford North
Lawrence behind a 189-yard rushing performance by Joumeel McLaurine.
Meanwhile, Seymour beat Madison, 35-7, after a 28-7 second half
performance.
Regular-Season Meeting:
In one of
its closest games of the season, the East defeated the Owls, 44-14.
Next Week:
The winner will face the winner of the South Dearborn-Madison
game. An East win would send the Olympians on the road to face either
the Knights or the Cubs. If Seymour wins, it would host Madison or go to
South Dearborn.
Last Year:
East won its second straight sectional championship and third in four
years. It was the Olympians’ fifth sectional title in school history.
The Olympians did not meet Seymour, which lost to East Central in the
first round, en route to the sectional title.
The “Inside” Scoop:
Three years ago, Seymour shocked the Olympians in the first round of
Sectional 15 play. As good as that East team was, this one is much, much
better and less susceptible to an upset.
Scoop’s Pick:
Columbus East 45, Seymour 7.

Winners
Favorite:
Columbus East. As much of a favorite as a favorite
can be.
Darkhorse:
East Central. In a normal year, the 8-1 Trojans
would be a favorite to win a sectional -- if not more.
This season, however, they have to hope for a miracle
against No. 1 East.
Best
Player: Dusty Kiel. If the voters in Indiana are
sane, the Olympians' senior quarterback is the
hands-down Mr. Football. Unfortunately, they're not
sane.
X-Factor:
Columbus East's health. This is the only thing I can
think of that could stop the Olympians. They have had
some healthy issues and injuries probably stopped them
from winning the 2007 4A championship.
Scoop's
Picks
First
Round:
Shelbyville
41, Franklin County 14; East Central 43, Connersville
12; Columbus East 45, Seymour 7; Madison 26, South
Dearborn 19.
Semifinals: East Central 22, Shelbyville 13;
Columbus East 55, Madison 7.
Championship: Columbus East 42, East Central 14.
The
"Inside" Scoop: Not much needs to be said;
East in a landslide.

BULLDOGS
WIN ANOTHER THRILLER
New
Albany tops Seymour, 48-41 in three overtimes
New
Albany overcame a later Brandon Polbito 106-yard
interception return for a touchdown to beat Seymour,
48-41 in triple overtime on Friday.
It was
the third straight season the Bulldogs and Owls have
gone into overtime, with the home team winning each
time.
In the
third overtime, Graham Brown scored from two yards
out. When it was Seymour's turn to try to send it to
a fourth overtime, Greg Burbridge sacked Owl QB Chad
Moore to end the thriller.
Brown,
who completed 21 of 34 passes for 321 yards and four
touchdowns, gave New Albany an early 21-7 lead with
two TD passes to Trevor Gordon and another to Brett
Martin.
Late in
the second quarter, Polbito scored his second
touchdown to pull the Owls to within 21-14 at the
half.
Moore
scored from 21 yards out to cut the Bulldogs' lead
to 21-20.
Melvin
Posey scored on a 9-yard run to give New Albany a
28-20 lead that seemed insurmountable until
Polbito's interception return and a Chad Moore
2-point conversion run sent the game into overtime.
Posey
finished with 154 yards on 16 carries.
The first
overtime saw each team score seven points. In the
second, both missed PAT kicks and make the score
knotted at 41 heading into the third overtime.
The
Bulldogs are 4-1 in games decided by a touchdown or
less this season.
New
Albany, which still has a shot a tying for the
Hoosier Hills Conference title, goes to Floyd
Central on Friday. The Highlanders improved to 3-5
and snapped a five-game losing streak with a 31-12
win over Jennings County on Friday.
The
Bulldogs need a victory over the Highlanders and a
Bedford North Lawrence win over Columbus East to
earn their first HHC crown since 2002.
Meanwhile, Seymour finishes its regular season at
home against Madison. The Cubs fell to 1-7 with a
47-7 loss to Bedford on Friday.

Time:

overall, 3-2 in the Hoosier Hills Conference); New Albany (5-2 overall,

(No. 16 AP in Class 4A).
Sagarin Ratings:
Seymour
(No. 110 Overall; No. 25 in Class 4A); New Albany (No. 79 Overall; No.
41 in Class 5A).
Sagarin Game
Prediction:
New Albany by 1.
Last Week:
Graham Brown threw
for four touchdowns and Zach Litzelswope hit a 26-yard field goal
with :49 remaining to help New Albany to a 31-28 victory over
Jeffersonville. Brandon Polbito scored three touchdowns to help lead the
Owls to 33 unanswered points and a 33-6 win over Jennings County.
Last Year vs. New
Albany:
Brandon Pobito scored on a 1-yard run in overtime, then Trevor Giles
intercepted a Graham Brown pass to preserve Seymour’s 42-35 overtime
victory. It was the second straight season the two sides went into
overtime, with the Bulldogs winning in 2006.
Last 10 Years vs. New
Albany: Seymour 6-4. Despite the Owls dominating the overall series, New Albany
has won four of the last six meetings. The two teams have split their
last four contests.
The “Inside” Scoop:
These are two very even teams. I think this game could go into overtime
for the third straight year, giving the home team the advantage.
Scoop’s Pick:
New Albany 29, Seymour 28.

OWL
DEFENSE DOMINATED
Seymour
offense comes alive in second half of 33-6 win over
Jennings County
Seymour's
defense dominated Jennings County in a 33-6 win over
the Panthers.
Brandon
Polbito made sure the Owl defensive effort wasn't in
vain.
Polbito
scored Seymour's first three touchdowns, on runs of
three, 11 and 17 yards. Polbito led all rushers with
112 yards on 20 carries. He also caught two passes
for 29 yards.
Polbito
was also a star on the Owl defense, which allowed
just six first downs and 90 total yards. He had
three tackles and both of Seymour's interceptions.
Jennings
County took the lead early on a 31-yard
first-quarter TD run by Dyvon Bass. Polbito tied the
score at six on a 3-yard run with just :37 left in
the first half.
Polbito
then scored twice in the second half to break the
game open.
A Chad
Moore-to-Kevin Ude TD pass and a 51-yard Jacob
Carmichael punt return in the fourth quarter gave
the Owls a 20-point quarter and the 33-6 victory.
Carmichael also led the Owls with 69 receiving
yards.
Bass led
the Panthers with 50 yards on the ground. Matt
Walker led the Jennings defense with 16 tackles.
Seymour
goes to New Albany next Friday to face a 5-2 Bulldog
team. New Albany beat rival Jeffersonville, 31-28 on
Friday, for their fourth win in five games.
The
Panthers will try to win their first game of the
season the same night when they host Floyd Central.
The Highlanders lost their fourth straight game,
35-7 to Bedford North Lawrence on Friday.
